Mauritius Prime Minister's Visit to India

New Delhi: The Prime Minister of Mauritius, Navinchandra Ramgoolam, is scheduled to visit the sacred city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh from September 10 to 12, as confirmed by a senior district administration official.

On September 11, he will engage in discussions with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a bilateral meeting in New Delhi.

Additionally, Ramgoolam is expected to participate in the Ganga Arti on the same day. On September 12, he will pay his respects at the Baba Kashi Vishwanath temple and then travel to Ayodhya, according to Varanasi Divisional Commissioner S. Rajalingam.

PM Modi will arrive in Varanasi on September 11, and after his meeting with Ramgoolam, he will return to Delhi.

The Union Ministry of External Affairs has announced that Prime Minister Ramgoolam's state visit to India will take place from September 9 to September 16, marking his first official trip to India during his current term.

Previously, Ramgoolam visited India in May 2014.

His itinerary also includes stops in Mumbai and Tirupati, where he will attend a business event in Mumbai.

During a media briefing on September 5, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal recalled Ramgoolam's earlier visit to India in 2014 for PM Modi's swearing-in ceremony.

Last month, Ramgoolam extended his greetings to PM Modi and the Indian populace on Independence Day.

In his message, he highlighted that Mauritius cherishes the principles of freedom, democracy, and unity that India has upheld since its independence in 1947, emphasizing the historical and cultural ties between the two nations.

Ramgoolam expressed, "On this auspicious occasion of India’s Independence Day, I extend my warmest wishes to the Government and people of India. As we commemorate this historic day, we celebrate the values of freedom, democracy, and unity that India has so valiantly upheld since 1947. The bonds between Mauritius and India are rooted in history, culture, and ties that continue to inspire cooperation, friendship, and mutual respect between our nations. May India continue to flourish in peace, prosperity, and progress, guiding the world with its example of resilience and vision. Happy Independence Day, India!"

In response, PM Modi thanked Ramgoolam for his kind wishes, referring to Mauritius as India's "strategic and trusted partner" in their mutual quest for progress and prosperity.

PM Modi remarked, "Deeply appreciate your warm wishes, Prime Minister Dr. Navin Ramgoolam, on the occasion of our Independence Day. Mauritius will always remain a strategic and trusted partner in our shared pursuit of progress, prosperity, and a bright future for our peoples."

Earlier this year, PM Modi visited Mauritius for two days at Ramgoolam's invitation to participate in the 57th National Day celebrations, where he held discussions with Ramgoolam and Mauritius President Dharam Gokhool.

According to the Indian High Commission in Mauritius, India maintains "close and longstanding relations" with Mauritius, rooted in shared history, demographics, and culture. Mauritius was among the first countries to establish diplomatic relations with independent India in 1948, even before its own independence. This relationship is characterized by a high level of trust and mutual understanding at the leadership level, along with ongoing high-level political engagement.
